Sefton Coastal Communities Team

The Sefton Coast lies between the estuaries of the Mersey and Ribble in north-west England. The sand dunes, beaches and marshes of the Sefton Coast form one of the most important areas for nature conservation in Europe.

A series of towns along the coast is home to over 150,000 people and 5000 businesses in the area employ more than 50,000 people.

The Coast has a wealth of tourism assets, including National Trust at Formby and the bathing beach at Ainsdale, attracting over 1.2m visitors each year. However, local businesses and communities feel that the visitors often “drive through” the area and that the quality of life provided by the fantastic Sefton Coast is often undervalued.

The Coastal Community Team in a short period has gained enthusiastic support from business and local people for six areas of activity, underpinned by a high-quality natural environment.

A programme of actions that will lead up to a celebration of the Coast in 2017 coinciding with the British Open at Royal Birkdale and the 50th Anniversary of National Trust’s Project Neptune.
