Margate

South East

MARGATE : the original traditional seaside resort (1736), and very proud of its heritage, is enjoying a 21st century Renaissance in the wake of the Turner Contemporary Art Gallery Effect and now the developing Dreamland Historic Amusement Park. Both these have enlivened the Old Town with a variety of new eateries, drinkeries and retro shops as a further speciality. Three theatres including the country's second oldest and a restored Art Deco cinema on the way. The highest concentration of Blue Badge beaches outside Cornwall and clifftop walks are as abundant as ever – and of course 'the finest skies in Europe.'

The Coastal Community Team will maintain this Magical Margate Momentum, building on a fast growing 'creative cluster' with The Margate School as flagship – bridging art and technology with international partnerships and introducing Kent's first FabLab (a fabrication laboratory for business to experiment with the Digital Revolution and regenerate employment opportunities.)

The enormous seafront assets will be enhanced by the establishment of a Margate Coastal Park in association with the University of Kent and will continue Margate's centuries-old reputation as the place to go for 'health and well-being' -  mental and physical.

The Town Team is looking at ways to outreach to Cliftonville to explore possibilities of harnessing the diverse and energetic commercial potential of the Northdown Road : Teenage Markets, Pop Up Shops and Indoor Markets are all under consideration.

Upwards and Onwards : Margate is changing fast – there will always be something new in Margate – at any time of year.
