Fremington

South West

Fremington is a community on the outskirts of Barnstaple. The heritage of Fremington comes from its development as a port in the 19th century, the railway that connected it to the national trade network and the people who lived and worked in the immediate area.

With the closure of the railway in 1982, the quay was left redundant. Gradually over the intervening years the area has been developed creating the infrastructure that is there today – incorporating the Tarka Trail, a café, visitor centre, bike hire, and promenade along the old Quay, and the wider business community.

A masterplan for the area is needed in order to enable Fremington to reach its full potential, and for the wider area to experience the economic benefits of this. With the right input, Fremington could become a major tourism destination with a thriving economy.

The businesses that operate out of Fremington Quay, and the surrounding areas need help to expand, growing the local economy and providing much needed skills, training, and employment.

The Coastal Community Team is using its funding to create a masterplan for the area, outlining short term and long term goals that will help to create a thriving community.
