Durham Heritage Coast

North East

Ours is a post-industrial coast that extends southwards from the River Wear in Sunderland through Durham to Hartlepool on the River Tees.

This coast has emerged from its industrial past and blossomed into an area worthy of Heritage Coast status. Gone are the days when collieries tipped millions of tonnes of waste onto the shore; the infamous Black Beaches of Durham.

International recognition of the restoration of the coast is one thing, we are now learning how to continue to protect and enhance its special qualities whilst sustainably exploiting its economic potential.

Our Coastal Community Team reinforces our established partnership and is helping us stride on towards our sustainable future.
