Opera for All is a three-year programme and is currently working within the coastal areas of Thanet, Skegness, Grimsby and Somerset as it begins its third year of activity.
This year the focus is on Handel’s Semele – a love story with a twist; the world of the gods, full of enchantment, is set to provide unlimited inspiration for creative working.
To get a flavour of the opera you can find more details on the Garsington Opera website here.
The activity explained
Throughout 2017 teams of professional artists, including singers, directors and musicians from Garsington Opera will be resident in each of the four areas delivering creative performance workshops with local schools and leading professional development training with teachers and local artists. They will also present and perform as part of a final screening day.
All workshops and training sessions are intense and practical, immersing the participants, whatever age, into the music, story, and underlying themes of the chosen opera. This year the focus is on Handel’s Semele – a love story with a twist; the world of the gods, full of enchantment, is set to provide unlimited inspiration for creative working. Throughout each of the residencies, participants will work closely with the artistic team to interrogate the plot, study the music and write original work. They will learn stage craft, vocal technique, and will have the opportunity to share their work with other students.
Opera for All artists will be working with a variety of community groups across each area in practical workshops to create promenade performances on the day of the screening.
The screening days 2017
Garsington’s production of Semele will be screened for free in each of the areas. Some screenings will be part of existing local festivals, others will be public events within local authorities’ wider cultural programming. Each event will involve work from local schools and community groups.
