Coastal issues and the Select Committee Inquiry into coastal towns

Coastal realism and aspirations

The leadership of an area that promotes a realistic vision of what can be achieved can inspire and harness the resources and goodwill of other coastal organisations by providing clarity and direction. Often, ‘brainstorming’ events on the future of resorts, market towns, cities or regions undermine the exercise, and the confidence of partners and the community, by debating unattainable goals. Places, like people, need to be realistic about their aspirations and potentials. Much of this Handbook is about maximising the existing potential of resorts and raising local pride and enhancing local distinctiveness to improve the quality of life for residents, businesses and visitors. Personally, I have harboured aspirations to be urbane, witty, sexually magnetic and six feet two. However, at five feet seven, I know I am not going to achieve the last – but three out of four are within reach!
