Widnes, Sankey Canal

North West

Sankey Canal Coastal Community Team aims to promote and enhance the unique industrial heritage of The Sankey Canal from the Upper Mersey Estuary at Spike Island in Halton to Fiddlers Ferry Wharf in Warrington. Restoration of the canal will make a valued contribution and link both Boroughs and provide a business and leisure opportunity that can promote this unique heritage to a diverse audience.

The Sankey Canal Coastal Community Team consists of a broad partnership of local organisations, voluntary and community groups as well as local authorities and businesses.

The vision is to create economic growth by improving the infrastructure to attract new businesses and to boost the visitor economy based on the industrial history and heritage of the area. To achieve this, the Team will undertake consultation and feasibility studies with the aim of establishing a Heritage/Environmental Learning facility utilising the rich history and heritage of the upper Mersey.
